What is spoken word? Can it be theorized? Will we soon see spoken word MFA programs? What will the
reading lists look like? In this roundtable discussion, panellists will talk about the texts and thinkers that
have informed their own understandings of spoken word, and about whether and how theory connects
with practice.
Corey Frost is a spoken word performer and a PhD candidate in English at the Graduate Center of the City
University of New York. He is working on a comparative study of spoken word scenes in New York, London,
Montreal, and Melbourne. His latest book is My Own Devices: Airport Version, a collection of travel stories.
