Sarah Murphy (Calgary)

Calgary-based Sarah Murphy is the first spoken word artist to receive an Arts Council England International Artists Fellowship. Her first CD, when bill danced the war, was recorded on September 11th, 2007 while in residence at Word Hoard in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. A version of when bill danced the war formed part of her award-winning intermedia collection, die tinkerbell die. During her five-month residency, Sarah also collaborated with Word Hoard to create two other intermedia projects, Falling into Place and Straying from the Path. Author of seven books, Sarah is a translator, interpreter, teacher, performer, community activist, and award-winning visual artist. Her books include novels - Lilac in Leather, Connie Many Stories, and The Measure of Miranda, collections of short fiction - The Deconstruction of Wesley Smithson and Comic Book Heroine, monologues and an innovative mix of memoir and fiction found in her most recent book, The Forgotten Voices of Jane Dark. Appearing at festivals and reading series throughout Canada and the United Kingdom, Sarah has published in Canada, The United States, The United Kingdom, and Australia. Currently, she is continuing work on her ongoing 26 Nutmeg Mews cycle, monologues of a Brooklyn childhood, from which die tinkerbell die evolved. Her latest intermedia work, Last Taxi to Nutmeg Mews (Pedlar Press, Toronto) is forthcoming in the spring of 2009.
